2. Left On Election Ave.

Romans 8:28-30

28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

On Sunday Pastor Vaughn talked about the comfort and joy and confidence many Christians find in being "elected", chosen, & predestined by God for salvation and good. He also told us that many unbelievers find "election" to verify that God is unjust or even evil for choosing some for heaven and choosing others for hell. Pastor Vaughn told us that focusing on the things we know about God would help us to realize that both believers & unbelievers are likely misunderstanding what the bible is saying about election.

Romans 9:20-23

20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory

What do we learn about God & election by considering God as the Potter and people as the clay? What are vessels of honorable use and vessels of dishonorable use? What is the connection between God's wrath & power with His enduring dishonorable vessels with much patience? How does God's patience reveal His glory to honorable vessels? What did Pastor Vaughn mean by saying the "elect" are those who have chosen to be chosen? How does God work all things for good for those who are called/chosen/elect? (Group Discussion - Questions above to be considered as part of the discussion)

3. Right On Romans Rd.

Romans 10:9-10

9 if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

On Sunday Pastor Vaughn said if “election” meant God chooses who will be saved and who won’t, then it wouldn’t matter if we say these words and believe them or not because God has already decided. He suggested that we all know in our hearts that this just isn’t true because we know our thoughts and feelings and beliefs and words really do matter.

Romans 10:14-15

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Pastor Vaughn said that because our thoughts and feelings and beliefs and words really do matter evangelism matters too!

Romans 10:17

17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

What role does the whole bible play in getting unbelievers to go down Romans Rd. (Romans 10:9)? What role does the preaching of God's word play in getting unbelievers to go down Romans Rd. (Romans 10:9)? What role does the testimony (verbal & lifestyle) of individual Christians (yours!) play in getting unbelievers to go down Romans Rd. (Romans 10:9)? Is it easy or difficult to "confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord"? Is it easy or difficult to "believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead"? If you were able to take someone down the Romans Rd. (Romans 10:9) and they said the words and told you they believed them in their heart, how would you assess whether or not it was real and if they were truly saved or not? Do you confess Jesus as Lord? What does it "feel" like to believe in your heart that Jesus was raised from the dead? (Group Discussion - Questions above to be considered as part of the discussion)
