2. Behold The Messiah

Isaiah 62:11

Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your salvation comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.”

On Sunday Pastor Vaughn talked about prophesies like this one that was given 700 years before Jesus arrived on Christmas morning and how the categories were right but the specifics gained clarity once Jesus came and taught His people.

2 Corinthians 6:2

2 For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

After the birth, life, crucifixion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus we see that we now live in the time of salvation. Salvation is not coming, it is here!

What did Israel hope to be “saved” from before the cross and what do we know we’ve been saved from on this side of the cross? What are some of the secondary things in our lives that we also hope to be “saved” or “delivered” from because the Messiah has come?

Why are rewards something that the Messiah comes with? Is salvation not reward enough? What are some of those rewards? Who gets them and who doesn’t?

Recompense means to make amends or to compensate. How does Jesus make amends or compensate as the Messiah? With who, for who, how? (Group Discussion)

3. Behold The Perfect Life

John 8:1-9

1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.

On Sunday Pastor Vaughn said that rather than focusing primarily on the sinfulness of the woman, or on the sinfulness of her accusers that could not cast stones, God wants us to focus our attention on the one without blemish or sin. The first thing we need to see in every situation is “The Perfect Life” of Jesus.

Exodus 12:5-6

5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, 6 and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight.

From the beginning of the Bible the sacrifices for sin or lambs needed to be without blemish because they were pointing to Jesus who is the lamb of God without a blemish or any sin.

We know that the Messiah saves, and we know that the Messiah is without sin but “how” does the sinlessness of Jesus actually save you or anyone else? *Hint - Romans 6:20-23* (Group Discussion)

4. Behold The Perfecter Of The Living

John 1:29

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 8:7-11

7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

Jesus takes away this woman’s sins and tells her to “go and sin no more”. On Sunday Pastor Vaughn said This is not a parent saying “and you better not do it again” but instead this is God saying, “now that I have protected you from judgement and I’ve taken your punishment, I have also made a way for you to become something new.” Pastor Vaughn said that Jesus’ command to “go and sin no more” is Jesus offering and expecting and saying to this woman and to us, “go in My love, go in My power, go with My Spirit, and if you do you will sin no more.”

Knowing that none of us will actually reach perfection before our own resurrection, how much further do you think you can go in the area of “going and sinning no more”? Do you feel like you live in the love of Jesus? Why or why not? Do you feel like you live in the power of Jesus? Why or why not? Do you feel like you live with the active indwelling Spirit of Jesus/God in you? Why or why not? (Group Discussion)
