2. Dinner With Sinners

Mark 2:13-17

13 He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to Him, and He was teaching them. 14 And as He passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” And he rose and followed Him. 15 And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and His disciples, for there were many who followed Him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that He was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Why did Jesus seem to seek out those in society that were clearly “ungodly” or living in ways that seem to identify them as those who did not desire God? While getting saved and becoming sanctified/transformed is the goal for every Christian, should we be concerned if our Christianity does not seem to engage/involve/reach the sick (in sin) that need a physician? What are some of the reasons this tends to happen? How can Christians protect their sanctification process and play a part in Jesus being able to have reservations for dinner with sinners? 3. New Wine & New Wine Skins

Mark 2:21-22

21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”

John 3:3

3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

2 Corinthians 5:17

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

On Sunday Pastor Vaughn focused on the need to be born again in order to be filled with the Holy Spirit. This seems to be something that believers need to understand in their heads and then live out in their bodies/actions/lives. Pastor Vaughn talked about our attempts to add God to our old lives rather than really believing that we are living new lives that God now leads, owns, & fills with His Spirit.

What does it mean to be born again? What does it mean to be a new wine skin? What are some of the challenges to believing/thinking that you have been born again? Do you feel like you are filled with the Holy Spirit/New Wine? Why or why not? What is the difference between being filled with the Holy Spirit and the command to be “being” filled?   (Group Discussion)

4. Snacks & Attacks

Mark 2:23-24

23 One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, His disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

1 Corinthians 9:9-11

9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11 If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you?

Mark 3:1-6

1 Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2 And they watched Jesus, to see whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.

John 14:11

11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

Why were those attacking and accusing Jesus and His disciples seemingly unaware or unconcerned with the work the disciples were doing or the healing & delivering that Jesus was doing? Are you/we sometimes guilty of the same? Why or how does this continue to happen in our day? How can we do a better job of nourishing those who are laboring/serving rather than making the work more difficult by sometimes even trying to deny them “a snack” as they labor? (Group Discussion)
