2. Sisters, Brothers, Aunts, Uncles, Mothers, & Fathers

1 Corinthians 4:15-17

15 For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 I urge you, then, be imitators of me. 17 That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.

On Sunday Pastor Vaughn talked about these countless guides in Christ from verse 15 including your brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles in the faith and how important their role is in every believers walk. Pastor Vaughn also highlighted how different their roles are in a believers life from that of spiritual mothers and fathers. This is true in regular families and true in church families.

Identify 1 person in your life who is a spiritual brother, sister, aunt, uncle, mother, or father and 1 way in which they have blessed your life in Christ? (Each Individual)

3. Foundational Roles

1 Corinthians 4:1-3

1 This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court.

On Sunday Pastor Vaughn said “Kids may have a grievance with their parents, Employees may have a grievance with their bosses, Church Members may have a grievance with their leaders but their ROLES determine how those grievances are addressed”.

Some people would like to live in a world where whoever is right always has the platform and authority and power. Do you think that would be the best form of interacting with people regardless of relationships and regardless of roles? Children & parents? Employees & bosses? Players & coaches? Citizens & police?

This is a more challenging question than it might initially seem to be.

On Sunday Pastor Vaughn also said that "Ultimately all of these relationships are a training ground for us because we will all have grievances with God." Pastor Vaughn said that likewise "How our grievances with God are addressed depends primarily on His role and our role in the relationship".

If right and wrong aren't what matter most in our relational grievances what are some other aspects that may be more important? Patience, humility, communication, grace, suffering, sacrifice? If "Roles" were seen as primary for dealing with grievances instead of right & wrong what opportunities open up to us that focusing on right & wrong don't allow? For example what can a child learn from potentially being "right" but unable to express it because of their role? What can a parent learn from potentially being wrong and not having to apologize because of their role? Consider these types of questions for different relationships with different roles. Wives & husbands, Employees & bosses, Members & leaders, etc.

Finally, "IF" all of those roles and relationships and learning opportunities are truly a training ground for how we will each individually relate to God, "THEN" the question is are we more helped to live in a world where "right & wrong" are what matters most, or are we more helped to live in a world where "roles" force us to engage relationally with people whether we are right, or wrong, or in authority, or powerless? (Group Discussion)
